Berlin

German prosecutor announces new charges against prime suspect

German public prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters announced on Wednesday that new charges have been filed against Christian B., the prime suspect in theMadeleine McCann case. The charges relate to the rape of an elderly woman in Portugal in 2005, near the resort where McCann disappeared in 2007.

Christian B., who is currently serving a prison sentence in Germany for raping an elderly woman in a flat near to where Madeleine McCann vanished, has never been charged in connection with McCann's disappearance. However, he has been identified by German and UK police as the main suspect in the case.

The new charges against Christian B. are based on DNA evidence that was found at the scene of the 2005 rape. Wolters said that the DNA matches Christian B.'s DNA profile, and that he is "convinced" that he is the perpetrator of the crime.

The announcement of the new charges against Christian B. is a significant development in the Madeleine McCann case. It is the first time that he has been charged with a crime that is directly related to McCann's disappearance.
