Florida surfer killed by shark while filming video for social media
Tamayo Perry, 49, was bitten by the animal while free-surfing near Shark Cove on Sunday afternoon
The renowned surfer and lifeguard known for his daring waves was filming a video for his Instagram account when the attack took place. Perry was bitten on the leg and died at the scene.
The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) confirmed Perry's death in a statement on Monday and said that the incident is under investigation.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Tamayo Perry, a beloved member of the Hawaii surfing community," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
Perry was a well-known figure in the surfing world and was known for his big-wave surfing skills. He appeared in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides, as a stunt double for Johnny Depp.
The attack is the second fatal shark attack in Hawaii this year. In January, a 65-year-old swimmer was killed by a shark off the coast of Maui.
