Teacher Loan Forgiveness: Eligibility and Recent Regulatory Changes

Overview

Teachers working in low-income schools or educational service agencies may qualify for Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF). The federal government has recently implemented regulatory changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

Regulatory Changes to Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Effective July 1, 2023, the Department of Education implemented significant changes to the PSLF program. These changes aim to simplify the process and make it easier for teachers to qualify for loan forgiveness. For the most up-to-date information, please visit the StudentAid.gov website.

Loan Discharge and School Closure

If your school closes while you are enrolled or soon after you withdraw, you may be eligible to have your federal student loans discharged. For more information, visit the Loan Forgiveness and Discharge Programs section on StudentAid.gov.

MOHELA Servicing Solution

MOHELA (Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority) is a part of Federal Student Aid's long-term servicing solution. In the future, this will allow borrowers to manage their federal student loans directly on StudentAid.gov.

Direct Loans and Consolidation

Only Direct Loans are eligible for PSLF. If your loans are not in the Direct Loan program, you can consolidate your non-eligible federal student loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan to make them eligible for PSLF.
