Boniface Header Gives Leverkusen Advantage
West Ham United suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the first leg of their Europa League knockout round play-off match on Thursday. Victor Boniface's late header sealed the victory for the German side at the BayArena.
The home team dominated possession from the start and created several chances, but it was West Ham who came closest to scoring in the first half when Jarrod Bowen hit the post. However, Leverkusen's pressure paid off in the second half when Boniface rose highest in the box to head home a cross from Piero Hincapie in the 86th minute.
The Hammers pushed for an equalizer but were caught on the break late on, with Moussa Diaby adding a second for Leverkusen in injury time. The result leaves West Ham with a mountain to climb in the second leg at the London Stadium next week.
